Damian Artt Poker

It was another moment to remember at the 2012 WSOP. The field of 2,770 had been reduced to only two players, each with hopes of earning their first bracelet in the $1,500 no-limit hold 'em Event 43. On one side of the table was a British poker icon. With decades of tournament experience and over $3 million in earnings to his name, plus a 4:1 chip lead, it appeared that it was finally Neil Channing's time to win his first bracelet. On the other side of the table was a 22-year-old from Brooklyn, Henry Lu, who perfected his game online and was looking for his first major tournament victory. Their poker backgrounds couldn't have been more dissimilar, but both enjoyed their time at the final table and wanted to come up big not only for themselves, for their incredibly vocal rails. After four hours of heads-up play, the kid outshined the veteran and emerged as the latest WSOP champion.

'Well, at first he was super aggressive - super, super aggressive,' said Lu of the heads-up match to WSOP.com. 'So, I tightened up a lot to try to take advantage of him over-playing a lot of his hands. Once I built up a big enough stack, I pretty much just leaned on him until he broke. He played really good. I got some pretty lucky key double-ups where he had A-10 versus my A-K, and the first hand I had A-Q versus his A-J. … He is not getting away. I got pretty lucky to be on the winning side.'

The fact that Lu made it to face Channing was a shock in itself. With 11 players to go, Lu was down to one big blind and was all-in. He won that key hand, then another, then another. Lu went from being ready to walk out the door to walking to the final table.

'I was going to go out in 11th place, and I would have been happy,' said Lu. 'It's a nice score, but it's like, 'now you can just play a lot more care free.' So yeah, the pressure was off. I thought I was done already. Coming to the final table was already more than what I expected.'

Lu attended Syracuse University but left in order to pursue his online poker passions. After Black Friday, he traveled to Las Vegas often and honed his live game as well. Lu earned $654,380 for the victory and his third career WSOP cash.

On the final hand, Lu's 4-4 defeated Channing's A-J all-in preflop. As Lu's supporters swarmed their friend and celebrated, Channing sat motionless. After a few moments, Channing stood up, shook Lu's hand and left the final table area to a massive round of applause. For someone who had put in his time in the game to come this close for a second time at the WSOP, Channing was rightfully devastated despite the $406,409 he earned for second place.
